Book Review of Big Lies in a Small Town

Diane Chamberlain’s newest book Big Lies in a Small Town was published in January of 2020. This story takes place in two time periods in a small town in North Carolina. In 1940 artist Anna Dale was chosen to paint a mural for the small town post office in Edenton, North Carolina. This work was part of the WPA project established by President Roosevelt. Anna Dale finds herself in the small, sleepy town far from her home in New Jersey. She is befriended by a woman who gives her a place to live. She finds herself immersed in a town where prejudices run deep, where people are hiding secrets, and where the price for being different might be murder. In 2018 Morgan Christopher was chosen to restore the mural which was in very bad shape and had been stored for many years. She was in prison for a crime she did not commit and was released with the stipulation that she would undertake this restoration of the old mural. The mural holds many secrets and much intrigue. As the story develops you will find a connection between the two women, Anna who created the mural and Morgan who did the restoration. This book is a very good read. It is available at Stanton Library as well as other Azalea Libraries.
