Mad Men

DVD Review Mad Men

I have recently discovered the joys of series binge watching thanks to the Library! My most recent series DVD binge was Mad Men. I can’t believe I am just now finding these treasures.

Mad Men is a seven-season series about the American advertising industry in the 1960s, when advertising really started shaping the way the public spent its money. Specifically, it is about a particular company and the men and women who worked there, and how they lived their lives. It has superb performances from old hands like Robert Morse, as well as newer faces, such as John Hamm, Elizabeth Moss, January Jones, and other great actors.

Never a dull moment, the series deals with issues like suicide, closet homosexuality, unwed mothers, religion, and differences in socio-economic cultures. The portrayal of the children of the main characters is sensitive and sympathetic. Yet, there is humor, along with plenty of drama. You won’t want to stop watching until the end, and I found myself wishing there was a follow-up movie like with Downton Abbey. The Library has the whole set of DVDs for your summer viewing enjoyment.
