Great children's book

Pirate Chicken All Hens on Deck

By Brian Yanish

Lily is a chicken, but not just any chicken.  She has more than your average bird brain.  While other chickens pecked, she plotted.  They roosted, she read books on cold fusion.  Life on the farm was good, but Lily knew she was meant for more.  She wanted to see the world.

One day a band of pirates invaded, and Lily saw her chance.  Hens were clucking “Ïḿ scared!” Roosters were hiding in their nests, but Lily stood tall and proud ready to report for duty.  All the chickens were gathered up and put on the pirate ship.  While on the ship Lily paid close attention and learned everything there was to learn about pirating.  The pirates paid no attention to a bunch of silly chickens.

One afternoon they stopped on an island and forgot a very important thing...the anchor.  After the pirates were all on the island, the ship and the chickens sailed away.  By morning the chickens were now in charge.  Of course, Lily had been preparing for this day, and she knew just what to do.  ALL HENS ON DECK!! She yelled.  And the chickens clucked to attention.  Ï am your new Captain.” said Lily  I will teach you to read maps, hoist the sails, and to steer the ship.  They sailed away to incredible lands, sang rowdy pirate songs, and held the craziest chicken dances.  But it wasn’t enough for Lily.  Ẅe need to be real pirate!” she clucked.  Its time to pillage and plunder.  ḦOORAY!” They exclaimed.  Before long Lily was known by a different name, Redfoot.  She became mean and the other chickens no longer wanted to be a part.  It was time for a mutiny.  The crew captured Redfoot and had her walk the plank.  Was this the end?  WAIT!  Said Redfoot.  Once I was free.  I clucked and pecked but I wanted more.  Now I have more treasure than I can ever imagine but everyone is scared of me.  “I am not an awful pirate.  My name is Lily and I am a chicken.!!  They all threw their pirate clothes overboard and took on a new mission.  Together they found a small island to call home and Lily gave up the rotten pirate life for good.  But of course, she still had other plans…!

If you find yourself reading this to your young children, you may end up reading it over and over since they love it so much!
