Afterlife a novel is the story of a woman trying to get her life back together and get back in touch with her true identity.
The setting is a small Vermont town. Antonia, who was born in the Dominican Republic, has just lost her beloved husband and becomes pulled into family drama with her three sisters while getting wrapped up in the plight of some young neighbor immigrants. Her involvement brings her back into the real world, causing her to deal with culture, institutions, and politics. There is tragedy, as well as humor in her story of recovery from grief and loss.
This is the first of Alvarez’s works that I have had the pleasure of reading, and I will seek out more of her works to check out from our library system.
